Undo close tab

Nash 0.11.4 adds Reopen Closed Tab. Press SUPER+Shift+T (Cmd+Shift+T on macOS), or use the command palette or Shell menu, to bring back the most recently closed tab in that window. Repeating the command works back through older closed tabs.

The useful part is recovering the arrangement: position, name, color, split layout, and working directories. The important limit is that this does not resume the programs that were running there.

Check What Will Run Again

Each restored pane starts a new shell in its recorded working directory. Scrollback is not restored. If shell integration recorded a command that was still running when the tab closed, reopening types and submits that command again. A deployment or database migration can therefore execute a second time. Treat reopening as reconstructing a workspace, not undoing the effects of closing it.

The layout includes active, zoomed, and folded panes. Each window keeps its 25 most recently closed tabs in memory; closing the window or restarting Nash clears the list. Closing the last tab also closes its window, so that tab cannot be reopened this way. For layouts kept across restarts, use session restore.

This history covers explicit tab closures, including closing a tab's final pane. It does not include tabs whose processes exited on their own or tabs made entirely of mux-server panes that restore cannot restart. The Tabs reference documents the remaining restore limits.

Learn the New Tab Defaults

The new reopen command takes a shortcut that previously opened a tab to the right. In 0.11.4, the defaults are:

  • SUPER+T or Ctrl+Shift+T opens a tab immediately to the right.
  • SUPER+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Y opens a tab at the end.
  • SUPER+Shift+T reopens a closed tab.

SUPER means Command on macOS and Windows or Super on other systems. In particular, Ctrl+Shift+T creates a new tab; it is not an alternative reopen key. Existing commands.toml overrides can preserve older bindings. Remove the relevant override's keys field to inherit the bundled default.

Keep Related Tabs Visually Related

New GUI tabs inherit the active tab's custom color. Each keeps its own copy, so recoloring one does not recolor the others. This does not apply to every spawn path: new windows, nash cli spawn, Lua window:spawn_tab(), and moving a pane into a new tab do not inherit the color.

Update for 0.11.5: only tabs opened immediately after the active tab inherit its color. Tabs appended at the end, including the new-tab button, no longer do. In 0.11.9, explicitly closed mux tabs can also reopen while their spawnable domain is attached; reopening still starts new processes. See Shared Tab State in the Mux Server.

With the top_line highlight style, inactive colored tabs show a top-edge pill that grows into a full line when selected. Under [tab.highlight], pill_length adjusts its length and grow_duration_ms adjusts the growth time; zero growth duration makes the full line appear immediately. These controls do not affect the tinted style.

Read Status Without Unfolding

Folded panes now replace their fold glyph with working, waiting, completed, or failed agent icons. In focused windows, busy icons keep animating even with the tab bar hidden. The strip has no timestamp; unfold it for the ordinary badge. See folded-strip configuration for the status colors and sizing.

Rapid tab switching also gets fixes for bouncing focus and high CPU usage, including mux-backed tabs. Switching repeatedly should no longer pull focus back to a tab you just left.
