Choose a Pane by Number

A tab with several shells is easy to arrange but less convenient to navigate. Moving through neighboring panes takes several key presses, and reaching for the mouse interrupts keyboard work. Nash 0.9.2 adds a direct alternative: hold a modifier chord and type the number shown over the pane you want.

The launch default is Alt+Shift, or Option+Shift on macOS. This matters when reading newer instructions: 0.9.4 changes the default to Ctrl+Alt+Super (Control+Option+Command on macOS). An explicitly saved chord is preserved on upgrade. The steps below describe 0.9.2.

Read the Layout, Not the Creation Order

Hold Option+Shift on macOS, look at the numbered badges, and type a pane's number. Release the modifiers when you are done. Number navigation is enabled by default, and its modifier chord is customizable.

The numbers follow the pane layout rather than the order in which you opened shells. They stay fixed for the duration of a hold. You can select a pane and then choose another without first releasing the chord or having to relearn the labels after each focus change.

This is useful when an editor, test runner, and shell share a tab. You choose the destination you can see instead of remembering how many directional moves separate it from the current pane.

More Than Nine Panes

The labels are numbers, not single-digit shortcuts. With enough panes, a digit can be both a complete label and the beginning of another label. Continue typing to select the longer number, or press Enter to confirm the shorter one. For example, when both 1 and 10 exist, type 1 then Enter for pane 1, or 1 then 0 for pane 10.

Press Escape to dismiss navigation. The selection keys belong to Nash while navigation is active; they are not typed into the shell you just selected. Held-key repeats and releases across focus changes are handled too, so holding a key does not leak navigation input into a terminal program.

Folded Panes in This Release

In 0.9.2, a folded pane can be selected by number without unfolding it. Selecting it does not restore its full size. Zoomed panes also stay zoomed. The later 0.9.4 behavior is different: folded panes are skipped entirely and the remaining numbers have no gaps.

The pane-navigation guide covers the newer defaults, chord customization, and shortcut conflicts. Keep the release distinction in mind when comparing its examples with a 0.9.2 installation.
